Libra Season & The Definition of Self-Seeking

Oh, Libra season, how I love you. Always so pretty, so delicious, and often also exhausting. As with sister Air sign Gemini season, Libra is highly social, desiring connection with others on many different levels, sometimes even over its own interest.

I always think of Libra as a beautiful mirror. Reflecting back to people their beauty, talents and creativity. Some of the most flattering compliments I've received have been from Libra people. They have a wonderful ability to highlight your best and are usually willing to tag along and cheer for you, ever the supportive partner. But as with all astrology, it is a double edged sword. In its radiant reflection of others, Libra often loses itself willingly and hungrily, for it is not natural for it to ask for what it needs, or perhaps it has never learned how to assert itself. Whatever the reason, often this energy ends up being very self-seeking.

The dictionary describes self-seeking as: having concern for one's own welfare and interests before those of others; self-serving.

While obviously this is one way of looking at it, I leaned into an other perspective on the word when doing some self work with a guide last week. We all have Libra in our charts, therefore we are all susceptible to this energy in some area of our lives. One thing I noticed when examining my Libra house was that I am often hungry in that area of my life, often even feeling resentful, hyper-sensitive and drained. This is what led me to my new perspective on the term "self-seeking".

What if self-seeking is seeking ourselves in others (very Libra tone)? Upon honest investigation, I realized that I often am craving to be treated in a way that I don't necessarily put out myself. In my concentration on my lack, I can sometimes turn to resentment and fester on my perceived injustice. This immediately puts a block on self-growth in that area and slows production to a halt. An example of this energy could be like lavishing someone with the kind of attention that you desire (even if it may not be their desire), and then being upset when that particular kind of attention is not given back to you.

Whether we notice it or not, longing creates tension, so much so that it can actually be painful! And what happens when we chase these things in others? It often only creates more of the same wanting, but now you're more drained and even hungrier. The whole process of chasing ones desires in another inevitably makes you tired and empty. This misdirected effort can be a lifelong habit if not checked, for it is an easy dynamic to place blame on the "other". They are the ones failing and disappointing, after all!

If you revisit the image of the mirror earlier in this article, you'll notice the bust of Aphrodite is facing outwards. To me this is a great image of how this self-seeking energy can manifest. We can only know an honest reflection when we are looking at ourselves, chasing inwards instead of outwards.

I invite you this Libra Season to move through the practice of naming your desires. This will help you sense how much of your surface desire arises from some deeper wanting in your being that may come from underlying loneliness, fear or emptiness. You can unearth the assuredness you seek beneath the demons desires can bring. Embrace your desires and focus your energies on bringing them to yourself, no longer wasting precious time tirelessly seeking this gift from others.

Sending you love,

Amber
